Lezgins take the important place among the
ethnoses belonging to the Caucasian language family. During
the modern period it is settled in territory of the Azerbaijan
Republic, basically in Kusar, Khachmaz, Geokchay, Gabala, Oguz,
Ismaily areas. The name of ethnos is "lezgiyar". On
historical sources ancestors of lezgins were ancient Albanian
tribes called by "leg", occupied in territory between
the Gudual and Samur rivers (now territory of Dagestan).
Not casually, that ethnicom "leg" meant all tribes
speaking in lezgin language. One of these tribes was "lakzi".
They lived in ancient historical area of Azerbaijan Maskuta
to the West, in the top part of the Samur river, in territory
under the "Lakz" name. Among local population, one
of tribes of southern Dagestan was meant under "lakz"
ethnicom. In XIX-XX centuries all population of Dagestan began
to be called as lezgins, therefore the ethnos has adopted the
name "lezgins". Lezgin language shares on three dialects:
Kure, Akhti and the Cuba dialects.
